49ers dream of a return
The San Francisco 49ers’ dream of a return trip to the Super Bowl was dashed on Sunday, as they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. After coming from behind to take a fourth-quarter lead, the 49ers were unable to hold off an inspired Eagles team, and ultimately lost by a score of 25-23.
The game began on a positive note for San Francisco, as the team forced an Eagles punt on their first possession, and then drove deep into Philadelphia territory. However, the drive stalled at the Eagles’ 19-yard line, and kicker Robbie Gould missed a 37-yard field goal attempt which would have given the 49ers an early lead.
The Eagles took advantage of the missed opportunity, as quarterback Nick Foles orchestrated a nine-play, 77-yard drive that culminated with a touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz. The score put the Eagles into the lead 7-0, and was a sign of things to come in a game dominated by Philadelphia.
The 49ers responded with a drive of their own, as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led the offense down to the Eagles’ 3-yard line. The drive was highlighted by running back Jeff Wilson Jr., who ran for 32 yards on four carries and caught two passes for 19 yards. However, San Francisco stalled again in the red zone and was forced to settle for a field goal, cutting the Eagles’ lead to 7-3.
Philadelphia then regained control of the game, as they scored on their next three possessions. First, Foles connected with wide receiver Alshon Jeffery on a 28-yard touchdown pass, then kicker Jake Elliott added a 33-yard field goal. Finally, running back Jay Ajayi capped off a seven-play, 45-yard drive with a 6-yard rushing touchdown to give the Eagles a 25-3 lead.
The 49ers refused to go down without a fight, though, as they answered Philadelphia’s three scores with two of their own. Garoppolo completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, and Wilson added a late 4-yard scoring run. However, the late rally came up short as the 49ers were unable to recover an onside kick with 1:49 remaining in the game.
In the end, it was a disappointing day for San Francisco, as their hopes of making a return trip to the Super Bowl were extinguished. Despite the loss, the 49ers should be proud of how far they’ve come in such a short period of time and they now have an entire offseason to work on improving even further. With Garoppolo under center and head coach Kyle Shanahan at the helm, the 49ers should be a team to watch for years to come.
Despite the loss, San Francisco will always remember this season fondly and look back on it with pride. After all, the 49ers—once considered one of the worst teams in the NFL—have managed to make one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent memory and have firmly established themselves as one of the conference’s top contenders. While it wasn't enough to get them to the Super Bowl this year, San Francisco has certainly earned respect from around the league.
The 49ers will now turn their attention to the offseason, where they will look to build on their impressive performance in 2018 and make a stronger push for a championship in 2019. The future looks bright for San Francisco, and the team has plenty of reasons to be optimistic about their chances next season.
Until then, the 49ers can reflect with pride on what was an impressive 2018 campaign that saw them re-emerge as one of the NFL’s elite teams. Despite falling short of the Super Bowl, San Francisco has certainly earned respect and admiration from around the league—and that is something that no one can take away.
The 49ers will be back in 2019 with high hopes of a Super Bowl run and they have all the tools necessary to make it happen. With Garoppolo under center and Shanahan at the helm, anything is possible for San Francisco. It’s time to watch out for the 49ers—because they're ready to make some noise next season.
Go Niners!
